How a Pap Smear Can Save Your Life
A Pap test, commonly known as a Pap smear, is a routine procedure used to detect abnormal cells in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. At Bowie Internal Medicine, we offer a variety of women's health services in Bowie, Maryland
The Pap Test Saves Lives
According to the American Cancer Society, over 13,000 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2019, with approximately 4,250 deaths. Cervical cancer was once a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American women, but the introduction of the Pap test has significantly reduced these numbers.
The Pap test helps detect changes in cervical cells well before cancer develops, and early detection makes treatment easier and more effective. Regular screening, using a Pap test alongside an HPV test, is the best method for catching cervical cancer early.
When to Have a Pap Test
Since changes in cervical cells take 3-7 years to progress, you don’t need a Pap test annually. Typically, Pap tests are recommended every three years for women aged 21 to 65.
From age 30, you can either continue with a Pap test every three years or opt for co-testing, which combines a Pap test with an HPV test every five years. If you’re at higher risk for cervical cancer, more frequent testing may be advised. After age 65, testing may stop if you’ve had consistently normal results.
Preparing for a Pap Test
Before your Pap test, avoid sexual intercourse for two days, and don’t use vaginal douches, medications, or spermicides, as these can obscure abnormal cells. It’s also best to schedule your Pap test when you’re not on your period, as menstrual fluids can interfere with accurate results.
What to Expect During a Pap Test
During a pelvic exam, your provider will use a speculum to gently open the vagina and collect cells from your cervix using a small swab or brush. These cells are sent to a lab for analysis. We'll notify you if abnormal cells are found and discuss follow-up steps
It’s important to remember that an abnormal Pap result doesn’t necessarily mean cancer—it simply indicates the need for further investigation. Our physicians at Bowie Internal Medicine have expert knowledge of women’s health services in Bowie, Maryland.
