When to See a Gastroenterologist for Rectal Bleeding in Maryland

Finding blood in your stool can cause anyone to worry. While there are many different causes for rectal bleeding, most of which are not serious illnesses or life-threatening, there may be some circumstances where a trip to the Gastroenterologist is needed. Here are just a few reasons it may be time to find a Gastroenterologist near you.

The Color of Blood is Significant

The color of the blood is very important. If the blood is dark red or black, it is most likely coming from your upper gastrointestinal tract. It could be a number of things including ulcers, gastritis, or an inflammation of the stomach lining, enlarged veins in the esophagus or stomach, trauma to the esophagus, or gastroenteritis which is an inflammation of the stomach or intestines.

If the blood is bright red, that usually means it’s coming from the lower part of your gastrointestinal tract. This is a sign of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, ulcers, polyps on the intestinal wall, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease like colitis, Crohn’s disease, and worst case scenario, colon cancer.
