COVID Booster in Maryland Updated Recommendations

COVID Booster in Maryland is an important part of protecting yourself and your family. Make sure you review the updated recommendations to ensure that you are fully protected. Here’s what you should know.

Why do I need a booster?

Covid-19 vaccine boosters enhance or restore protection. Over time, your primary vaccination could decrease. So, a booster is necessary to ensure the best protection. Additionally, there are different recommendations for people who are moderately or severely immunocompromised.

Who can get a booster?

Everyone over the age of five should get 1 booster after completing the primary vaccine series. People over the age of 50 should receive two boosters. Furthermore, people 12 and older who are moderately to severely immunocompromised should receive a second booster.

Choosing a COVID Booster

For adults over 18, CDC recommends a Pfizer or Moderna booster at least 5 months after the final dose of the primary series. J&J can be given 2 months after the final dose. For immunocompromised individuals, the booster should be administered 3 months after the final dose for Pfizer and Moderna or 2 months after for J&J. A second booster is recommended 4 months after the first booster for all.

For children 12-17, updated recommendations include a Pfizer booster for most children and teens at least 5 months after the final dose of the primary series. Children who are immunocompromised should receive a booster 3 months after their final dose of the primary series. A second booster is recommended for these individuals 4 months after the first booster.

Children ages 5-11 may receive a booster of Pfizer 5 months after the final dose of the primary series. Or 3 months after for children who are immunocompromised. At this time, a second booster is not recommended for anyone in this age group.
