If you are suffering from constant pain and discomfort in one or more of your joints, injections might be the answer to your pain. Keep reading to learn about the types of joint injections work to treat pain.

Types of Joint Pain

Joint pain arises for many reasons. Your doctor will want to figure out what causes your pain to determine the best course of treatment.

He or she will take a detailed medical history, learn about your symptoms, and may perform tests.

What are Peripheral Joint Injections?

Peripheral Joint Injections are a minimally invasive procedure performed by your doctor where medicine is injected directly in to the joint. The goal of the injection is to resolve pain associated with conditions such as arthritis, and tendinitis.

Cortisone injections can treat joint pain by reducing the pain and inflammation felt at the joint.

Where can Joint Injections Treat Your Pain?

The most common areas treated with peripheral joint injections are the following:

·      Knees

·      Hips

·      Shoulders

·      Elbow/hand/finger/wrist

·      Ankle/Foot/Toes

How are Joint Injections Administered?

Generally, joint injections and how they are administered depends directly on the treatment area.

Depending on the treatment area identified, your doctor will insert the injection with you laying down on a fluoroscopy table or sitting up.

An x-ray machine is used during the procedure in order to properly guide the needle to the affected area.

Next, your skin will be numbed and the needle will be inserted.

The medicine injected in to the affected area is an anti-inflammatory medicine called cortisone.

In most cases, you will be able to resume your daily schedule however in some cases you may need to be admitted to the hospital for further evaluations.
